Today we did a quick “check up” on where students are with their “Thank You Ma’m” digital playlist.  We then did a guided mini-lesson on annotation strategies to reinforce what is taught through the two tutorial videos in the playlist.

  1.  We reviewed the purple and teal annotation strategies students have in their binder.
  2.  We looked at a sample annotated text.
  3.  We reviewed how to complete the annotations in CommonLit as well as paper.
  4. We read a paired text to “Thank You Ma’m”, a poem by Naomi Shihab Nye, “Kindness.”  We also got to hear the author tell us about the inspiration for the poem.
  5. We completed two annotations for the poem.
  6. Students picked their best annotation and shared through “Everyone Up!”, a review game in which everyone stands until he/she share his her work.  This work counted as a performance assessment today.
